HURRICANE MATTHEW - Another deadly blow to Haiti

All Hands on Deck - With your help, we want to help the community of Fauge Haiti get back on its feet after widespread property damaged from hurricane Matthew.
The pictures below show a glimpse of the damage left behind by hurricane Matthew. Your prayers and contributions can help us help the people of Fauge Haiti get back on their feet as well as putting our kids back into a safe place of learning; a place where they can prepare themselves for a better future.

Accomplishments and Planned Activities

February 2016 Updates

Since we started this project in 2010 to foster the hope of a better future in the heart of the children of Fauge Haiti, we have accomplish much more than we have imagined.  We have been investing in the life of these under-privilege children and the difference that our investment makes in their lives and in the community is visible the moment you arrive in the village. Where dozens of children used to spend their day roaming the dirt roads of the village all day long unable to go to school because their parents cannot afford to send them, these children have been receiving quality Christian education at little to no cost to their parents for the past 4 years. They not only receive a quality academic and Christian education, they also receive leadership training through their interaction with the staff at IEBCF (The Torch of Hope school in Haiti) and coaching on how to prepare themselves to deal with the challenges of life.

In this school year (2015-2016), close to 300 have the opportunity to enjoy something that many children in Haiti would love to have but cannot, the opportunity to be educated. In addition, these children, most of whom come to school on an empty stomach almost every day, receive a hot plate of food every day, thanks to our partnership with Nelly's House, a Haitian owned and operated Non-profit Organization similar to Torch of Hope.  Since 2012, we have added one additional grade to our school every year.  In September 2015, we added 8th grade.  Now, in February 2016, we are putting the plan in motion to add 9th grade to our school in September 2016.  The addition of this new grade will require additional resources to prepare for it and to maintain it.  To be ready to add 9th grade this coming September, we need to finish building the 2 remaining classrooms on the second floor of the building.  We will need additional classroom furniture such as benches, teacher's desks, blackboards, etc... We will also need to hire additional teachers for this new grade.  We estimate that the construction cost will run about $6,500 to $7,500.  The cost to cover the expenses for the addition of 9th grade to the school is estimated at $6,000.  The addition of 9th grade will allow our students to obtain at least an Elementary education after we can direct them to vocational training, particularly, those whose parents are not able to send to High School because of lack of money as IEBCF will stop at 9th grade.

I remember the day when someone told me that every child you help get an education in Haiti is equivalent to closing a prison door and my experience tells me that there is a lot of truth in what this person told me. From that stand point, we are closing hundreds of prison doors and with your support, we will continue to do that even more effectively in 2016.

If you would like to support the work that we are doing, feel free to make a generous donation by clicking on the donate button on the top right hand side of this page or on our home page.  We thank you already for empowering us to make a significant difference in the life of these precious but under-privilege children.

--- TORCH OF HOPE RECENT UPDATES ---

2011 accomplishments:

1 - Completed the purchase of a piece of land to build the school which will carry the name "Institution Chretienne Mixte Louis Borel Chery de Fauge".  Of course, that's the french name of the school which translate into Christian Institute coed  of Fauge.

2 - Built the foundation of phase 1 of the school building which includes 3 classrooms and one administrative office. This building will serve as the initial phase of a multi phase project that will result in a multi level school/ministry complex with at least 15 classrooms.  We plan to use these buildings in the long term to serve the Fauge community and its surrounding and possibly the whole country of Haiti by starting with a well equipped primary school that will operate in the early hours of the day (8:00 am to 1:00 pm) and an evening school that will operate in the afternoon hours (2:00 pm to 6:00 pm).  A secondary school, a vocational school etc... will follow in the future.

3 - Built the floor of the building to prepare for the next phase of the construction of this phase which involves raising the wall and putting the roof on.

2012 Plans and Projections:

2012 is expected to be a great year for us at Torch of Hope Foundation, Inc because we expect that our dream of building a school to began to provide the children of the Fauge area of Haiti an opportunity to have access to quality education will finally become a reality.  We are working diligently to turn this dream into a reality.  We can do it with your help.  In 2012 we will:

1 - Raise funds to help us provide the children of Fauge in Haiti an opportunity to prepare a better future for themselves through quality education that will allow them to be leaders and active contributors in their communities rather than parasites and beggars.

2 - Complete the construction of phase 1 of the school building,  I.e. build 3 classrooms, one administrative office, bathroom facilities, one small storage area and potentially a small cafeteria to help us provide the students with snacks or one hot meal each day.

3 - Furnish the school with school benches, teachers desk and chairs, blackboards etc...

4 - Begin operating the school for the first time to provide the children in the Fauge area the opportunity to access quality education in their back yard at little to no cost to them.

5 - Raise funds to help cover the administrative cost of the school which we estimate to be about $1200.00 per month for phase 1.

6 - Raise funds to purchase an additional piece of land adjacent to the one we currently own to continue the construction of the remaining classrooms through 12th grade.

7 - Begin the fundraising process for phase 2 of the construction project which will involve the construction of 3 to 4 additional classrooms to allow us to receive more students and to began to meet the needs of the community around us.

8 - Hosts 3 to 4 mission teams this year.  We plan to recruit volunteer short term mission and/or construction workers to travel to Haiti with us to do mission work in the area and to help with our construction projects.

Ongoing Projects

Currently, Torch of hope is in the process of building a school in a remote town in the South end of Haiti named “Fauge”. Fauge and its surrounding areas make up a town of about 40,000. The nearest major town to Fauge is Les Cayes, located at about 196 km / 122 mi from Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. Fauge is located at about 16km/10 mi from Les Cayes.

* We have completed the purchase of a portion of a the land that we plan to use in the area to build the school and for future projects such a clinic and a vocational school. We are in the fund raising and construction planning phase of phase 1 of the school construction. Phase 1 consist of building 3 classrooms, 1 administrative office, one 2 bedroom storage unit, a small cafeteria to provide one hot meal to the children a day, restroom facilities, benches and other furniture for the school.

* Construction started on the main school building in April 2011. So far, we have dug the foundation for the first 3 classrooms and the administrative office. We hope to complete phase 1 construction by the end of August in time to have the school ready and operating when school starts in September this year in Haiti.

* We are seeking to raise about $39,000.00 to supplement our own contribution to help complete phase 1 of the construction project, begin construction of phase 2 and to cover the operating cost of the school through December 2012.

Below is a sketch of the land and the potential layout of the first 7 classrooms that we intend to build. Please note that the sketch is not to scale. Also, note that the second set of dimensions in the sketch are in feet. For example, the top portion of the land where the back of the school building is planned to measure 137.8 feet. The sketch depicts a total of 6 classrooms and 1 administrative office with an overhang that runs the length of the building. Phase 1 of the construction will focus on building the first 3 classrooms and 1 administrative office per the sketch below.
